Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the cough center in the brain, suppressing the cough reflex. It is a safe, non-opioid, and non-sedating antitussive agent, unrelated chemically or pharmacologically to opium derivatives. Following oral administration, it is rapidly and completely absorbed, achieving peak plasma levels within 9 hours for the sustained-release form. The plasma half-life is approximately 13 hours, and its active metabolites also possess antitussive properties.
Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and low blood pressure. Standard emergency measures should be taken — administration of activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and supportive cardio-respiratory care.
Adults:
Syrup: 15 ml, four times daily.
Children & Adolescents:
Syrup:
3–6 years: 5 ml, three times daily.
6–12 years: 10 ml, three times daily.
Adolescents: 15 ml, three times daily.
Biokof is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, mild side effects such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, or vertigo may occur, typically resolving after dose adjustment or discontinuation.
Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided to prevent mucus retention in the airways.
Contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Butamirate Citrate or any component of the formulation.
Should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.
May be used with caution during the later stages if prescribed by a physician.
Since it is unclear whether the drug passes into breast milk, the potential benefits and risks must be carefully evaluated during breastfeeding.
Biokof suppresses the cough reflex; hence, it should not be used with expectorants to avoid mucus buildup, which may lead to bronchospasm or respiratory infections.
Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12 years).
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children
